DISTRICT 1
New Jersey
Mark Z. Jia, Waltham, Massachusetts, graduated from Princeton in June. He is now teaching
American politics and constitutional history to aspiring diplomats at the China Foreign
Affairs University in Beijing. Mark was deputy national field director of Students for Obama,
interned for the Alliance for Justice and in Senator Edward Kennedy’s Office, and is
managing editor of Princeton’s progressive magazine. He is also president of the Princeton
Chinese Student Association. Born in China, his dream is to one day participate in the
constitution-drafting process for a democratizing China. Mark plans to do the M.Sc. in
politics at Oxford.

New Jersey
Aakash K. Shah, Cliffside Park, graduated from Ursinus College and is now in his first year at
Harvard Medical School. At Ursinus, he majored in inequality studies, biology and
neuroscience. A Goldwater Scholar and junior member of Phi Beta Kappa, Aakash was on
the varsity track team, worked with United Students Against Sweatshops in Mexico, and
examined environmental health problems in Indian slums. He plans a career combining
clinical and academic medicine with global health policy. He will do the M.Sc. in
Comparative Social Policy at Oxford. He is the first Rhodes Scholar to be elected from
Ursinus College.
DISTRICT 2
Connecticut
Nicholas A. Di Berardino, Westport, is a senior at Princeton where he majors in music
(composition). A campus leader in student government and a junior member of Phi Beta
Kappa, Nick is an accomplished composer with many awards for his compositions. He has
been a composer in residence at the Brevard Music Center and the European American
Musical Alliance in Paris. He founded the Undergraduate Composer Collective at Princeton.
While in high school, Nick founded a program to collect, refurbish and distribute used
instruments and to provide instruction to needy students in Bridgeport. He plans to do the
M.Phil. in music at Oxford.
Massachusetts
Laura K. Nelson, Westwood, is a senior at the University of Virginia where she majors in
political and social thought. A Jefferson Scholar at the University, she played varsity field
hockey while leading many undergraduate public service organizations. Laura is particularly
interested in the role of humanities in society, and created a series of informal short courses as
well as several forums to promote discussion about critical issues. At Oxford, she will do the
M.St. in English language and literature.
DISTRICT 3
New York
Zachary M. Frankel, Brooklyn, is a senior at Harvard College with concentrations in physics
and mathematics. He is fluent in Japanese and an accomplished debater, and has done
advanced graduate work in quantum field theory. He has also been a research assistant at the
Kennedy School of Government. Zach has worked extensively with the Global Viral
Forecasting Initiative, taking a semester off to develop models that help global health
organizations and governments prevent future pandemics. Zach plans to do a D.Phil. at
Oxford in infectious diseases (zoology).
New York
Zujaja Tauqeer, Staten Island, is a senior at Brooklyn College of the City University of New
York (and in the William Macaulay Honors College of CUNY), where she majors in history,
and is in a combined degree program for a medical degree at the New York Downstate
College of Medicine. Born in Pakistan, her life was disrupted as a fourth grader following her
father’s arrest and vandalism directed at their family for their status as Ahmadis. They were
granted asylum in the United States. Zujaja has done research in the neuroscience of autism
and has written on radicalization in Pakistan. At Oxford, she will do an M.Phil. in the history
of medicine.
DISTRICT 4
Delaware
Matthew T. Watters, Newark, is a senior at the University of Delaware, where he majors in
neuroscience and minors in political science. Matt has worked in two hospitals in South
Sudan training staff in prevention of infection, and in two hospitals in Haiti. He also
founded a student organization devoted to Haiti relief work that spread to other universities.
Matt is a nationally competitive mountain biker, and a leader in many student organizations.
He plans to do the M.Sc. in global health science at Oxford.
Pennsylvania
Andrew J. Lanham, Wooster, Ohio, graduated in May from Haverford College summa cum
laude in both English and philosophy. Andrew’s senior thesis was on Shakespeare’s Hamlet
and Nietzche’s philosophy, and he won numerous prizes across several disciplines. He also
ran cross-country for Haverford’s national top-ten team, and was elected its captain. He
served as head of the college honor council, and interned with the Pennsylvania Humanities
Council. He is currently a resident tutor for a nonprofit education organization serving
underprivileged minority students in the Lower Merion schools. Andrew plans to do a
D.Phil. in English at Oxford.
DISTRICT 5
Maryland/DC
Fagan E. N. Harris, Glen Burnie, graduated from Stanford in 2009 where he majored in
political science and American studies. He is currently completing an M.A. in human rights
in criminal justice at the University of Limerick in Ireland as a Mitchell Scholar. Fagan grew
from special education classes and a childhood where he knew more people in gangs and
prison than in college to a college career of great academic success and leadership, and has
remained committed to address the challenges of public education and juvenile justice reform.
He was vice president of the Stanford student body and president of Stanford Students for
Relief, where his efforts focused on Pakistan and Katrina. Fagan plans to do a D.Phil. in
education at Oxford.
North Carolina
S. Paul Shorkey, Jr., Charlotte, is a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,
where he has a double major in psychology and business administration. Paul has also studied
in Madrid and at King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry. He has numerous
publications in psychology and has worked as an intern in rural communities in Cambodia
and India, and on an HIV/AIDS project in South Africa. He also has been a leader in
student government at Chapel Hill. Paul plans to do the M.Sc. in psychological research at
Oxford.
DISTRICT 6
Georgia
Tracy J. Yang, Macon, is a senior at the University of Georgia where she majors in
anthropology. A Truman Scholar, she has focused her academic work on health disparities.
She has done research on a parasite prevalent in Latin American, and has explored the policy
and public health challenges inherent in reducing the parasite’s impact on public health.
Tracy has also worked on health disparities among marginalized populations in Georgia, New
York and Nicaragua. She has won many awards for her scholarship and is a leader of the
Roosevelt Public Policy Institute at the University. She plans to do the M.Sc. in global health
science at Oxford.
Virginia
William J. Zeng, Great Falls, is a senior at Yale where he majors in physics. His coursework
ranges from quantum physics and mathematics to comparative literature, philosophy and
Hindi. Will has done research at MIT and at the Quantum Device Lab in Zurich, and was an
intern in New Delhi with the Indian Youth Climate Network. He has competed
internationally on Yale’s lightweight crew, and has volunteered with the Special Olympics.
Will plans to do the M.Sc. in mathematics and the foundations of computer science at
Oxford.
DISTRICT 7
Florida
Caroline P. Barlow, Fleming Island, is a senior at the United States Naval Academy where
she majors in oceanography. Currently ranking third in the overall order of merit, she has
served as brigade commander, a member of the Navy cross-country team, and on the 2009
national championship triathlon team. Caroline has worked in the Pentagon for the Navy
Energy Coordination Office and presented at the Mountain Meteorology Conference in
Santiago, Chile. In addition to her research in wind climatology, she has worked at the Naval
Research Laboratory to improve the accuracy of tropical cyclone forecasting. Caroline plans
to do the M.Sc. in environmental change and management at Oxford.
Florida
Daniel E. Lage, Miami, is a senior at Harvard College where he majors in history and science.
He will graduate in May with both B.A. and M.A. degrees. Daniel has received three
fellowships to pursue research on the molecular biology of tuberculosis. He has also
contributed to leading medical publications in orthopedics and has studied geriatric medicine
in France. His senior thesis is on changing views of dementia and old age in the 20th century.
Daniel is also a leader of Cuban-American and Latino organizations. He plans to do the
M.Sc. in comparative social policy at Oxford.
DISTRICT 8
Texas
Ye jin Kang, Houston, is a senior at Rice University with majors in ecology and evolutionary
biology, as well as in policy studies in global health, and has a minor in biochemistry and cell
biology. A Truman Scholar, she has done extensive research on tuberculosis at the NIH, and
has worked in a hospital in South Korea (the country of her birth) and in Zambia. She also
designed and taught an undergraduate course in tuberculosis, and founded an undergraduate
science and engineering review. Ye jin became a U.S. citizen this year. At Oxford, she will do
the M.Sc. in global health science.
Texas
Baltazar A. Zavala, El Paso, is a senior at Harvard College with concentrations in engineering
sciences and neurobiology. A varsity football player, he has been on three trips to the
Dominican Republic with Engineers Without Borders to develop clean water systems. He has
worked as a research assistant in neuroscience labs at Harvard and in Shanghai. Baltazar was
born in Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, and emigrated to El Paso with his mother when he was
young. At Oxford, Baltazar will do the M.Sc. in neuroscience.
DISTRICT 9
Indiana
Esther O. Uduehi, Evansville, is a senior at Indiana University, Bloomington, where she
majors in biochemistry and mathematics. She was also a visiting student at Oxford. A Wells
Scholar, Presidential Intern and Senator Richard Lugar Scholar, and a member of Phi Beta
Kappa, she is president of the IU Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students. She has won
several awards for her research in organic chemistry, and has participated in a U.S.-Russia
global health care study program and done research at the Broad Institute of MIT and
Harvard. Esther plans to do the D.Phil. in chemistry at Oxford.
Ohio
Jared A. Dunnmon, Cincinnati, is a senior at Duke University where he majors in
mechanical engineering with a minor in economics. Jared’s public policy and scientific
interests focus on energy. He has been an environmental policy intern for the mayor of San
Francisco, and worked on a Clinton Global Initiative energy project. Jared’s research has
focused on renewable energy; he is currently designing an energy harvester that draws power
from beam oscillation in airflow. He has a pending patent on building materials. He is also a
vice president of the Duke Chapel Choir and president of a student sustainability project.
Jared intends to do the M.Sc. in engineering science at Oxford.
DISTRICT 10
Illinois
Alice L. Baumgartner, Chicago, graduated from Yale in May, summa cum laude in history, and
with the James Andrew Haas prize for intellectual achievement, character and humanity.
Alice has won numerous Yale and national prizes for both fiction and nonfiction and was a
poetry intern at the New Yorker, and has published in several leading national literary
magazines. She also won top prizes in American history, and is spending this year as a
Gordon Grand Public Service Fellow working at a health clinic in Palacios, Bolivia. At
Oxford, Alice plans to do the M.Phil. in development studies.
Illinois
Gabrielle A. Emanuel, Evanston, graduated summa cum laude from Dartmouth in June with a
major in history and a minor in psychology. She is currently in Mali where she is designing a
program on water access and purification. While at Dartmouth, she worked with homeless
women in Boston, on hunger in New Hampshire, on microfinance in India, and helping
Ugandans gain access to higher education. Her photographs have been published in national
publications and shown in exhibitions. Gabrielle was also a rider on Dartmouth’s varsity
equestrian team. She plans to do a D.Phil. in development studies at Oxford.
DISTRICT 11
Minnesota
Prerna Nadathur, Roseville, is a senior at the University of Chicago where she majors in
mathematics and minors in linguistics and philosophy. She writes poetry and fiction, plays
violin in the University chamber orchestra, performs classical Indian dance, and has won
prizes for her piano performances. Prerna has also been a leader in student government and
in social justice activities, and founded a chapter of Students for a Democratic Society. She
has done independent research on social choice theorems, set theory and homology. At
Oxford, Prerna will do the M.Phil. in general linguistics and comparative philology.
Minnesota
Priya M. Sury, Roseville, graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in May, summa
cum laude, in anthropology and Spanish. She is currently studying for an M.D. degree at the
University of Minnesota. At Washington University, she was the first student ever chosen for
all three of its most selective merit scholarships. Priya has done anthropological work on the
use of yoga in western medicine, and been a research intern at the Mayo Clinic in biomedical
imaging and ovarian cancer. She has also done research on adolescent suicide in the
Dominican Republic. She has studied in Chile and Mexico, worked on an HIV/AIDS
educational initiative and as a tutor for underprivileged Hispanic students. Priya plans to do
the M.Phil. in medical anthropology at Oxford.
DISTRICT 12
Missouri
Fatima I. Sabar, Ballwin, is a senior at Stanford majoring in biology. Her senior thesis is
based on her bioengineering research on designing medicinal products that are more
affordable. Fatima has conducted research at Stanford’s and Washington University’s schools
of medicine. She has worked on health projects in Mexico and Rwanda, volunteering at the
Pacific Free Health Clinic, coordinated World AIDS Week at Stanford, and is coordinating a
health education project for migrant farm workers in Salinas Valley. Fatima plans to do the
M.Sc. in global health science at Oxford.
Missouri
Anna V. Alekeyeva, St. Louis, is a senior at the University of Chicago where she majors in
history and public policy. Elected as a junior to Phi Beta Kappa and a Student Marshall, she
has interned at the Brookings Institution and Human Rights Watch. The focus of much of
her work, as an academic, in the field and as an activist, is on refugees and forced migrants.
Anna moved from Russia when she was five. She plans to do the M.Phil. in development
studies at Oxford.
DISTRICT 13
South Dakota
Renugan Raidoo, Sioux Falls, is a senior at the University of Iowa, with majors in chemistry
and anthropology. A Presidential Scholar at the University of Iowa and a Goldwater Scholar,
he has presented his research at conferences in Germany, California and Iowa. He is a leader
in the University’s global health initiative that provides for medical resources to the
developing world. Renugan is also music director of an a cappella group and active with
Amnesty International and BPlansForHumanity. Renugan and his family emigrated from
South Africa. He plans to do the M.Phil. in social anthropology at Oxford.
South Dakota
Sarah A. Swenson, Sioux Falls, is a senior at the University of Oklahoma, where she majors in
zoology and biomedical science. A junior member of Phi Beta Kappa, she has done research
in genetics and won many awards for her scholarship which ranges across biology, history of
science and literature. Sarah has also studied in Italy and volunteered extensively in hospitals,
education, animal welfare and for Haitian relief. Before going to medical school she plans to
do a B.A. in history and English at Oxford.
DISTRICT 14
Montana
Kathleen C. Hansen, Bozeman, graduated from Montana State University in May, summa cum
laude, with a major in industrial and management engineering and a minor in economics.
She is now at the Arava Institute at Kibbutz Kefura, Israel, working on joint water
conservation projects between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. While at Montana State,
where she was student body vice president, she was also president of the Engineers Without
Borders chapter and led its projects in Kenya, and interned with the Mali Agribusiness
Network. Katy plans to do the M.Sc. in water science, policy and management at Oxford.
Oregon
Tamma A. Carleton, Elk, California, graduated summa cum laude from Lewis and Clark
College in 2009. Since then, she has worked as a research analyst at the Federal Trade
Commission in Washington, D.C. Tamma was a member of the varsity cross-country and
track teams at Lewis and Clark, and worked extensively as a research assistant in the
economics department. Since moving to Washington, she became a founding member of the
Columbia Heights Community Marketplace, and is interested in linking sustainable local
agriculture to improved nutrition in low-income neighborhoods. She plans to do the M.Sc. in
environmental change and management at Oxford.
DISTRICT 15
California
Varun S. Sivarum, Monte Sereno, is a senior at Stanford majoring in engineering physics and
international relations. A Truman Scholar and junior mentor at Phi Beta Kappa, Varun has
won Stanford prizes for excellence in humanities and political science, as well as in
engineering. He is chair of the undergraduate senate, undergraduate representative to the
board of trustees and to the faculty senate, and captain of an Indian dance team. He has done
engineering research in Germany and in the Stanford synchrotron radiation laboratory. and
has two patents pending relating to solar energy design. He plans to do a D.Phil. in solar
energy materials at Oxford.
Hawaii
Jennifer I. Lai, Honolulu, Hawaii, is a senior at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology,
where she majors in biological engineering, music and theater arts. A pianist at the same
professional performance level as students at the finest conservatories, she has a perfect record
at MIT in advanced courses across mathematics, physics and engineering. She has done
research in the molecular basis of glioblastoma and in the use of engineering tools towards the
development of protein therapeutics. Jenn also is active in her sorority and with a support
organization for HIV-positive individuals. She plans to do the M.Sc. in integrated
immunology at Oxford.
DISTRICT 16
California
Megan C. Braun, Coronado, graduated in October from the University of California, Irvine,
with a B.A. in history and a minor in philosophy. A junior member of Phi Beta Kappa, she
was also president of the student government and goalie for the women’s varsity water polo
team. Since graduation, she has attended Cambridge University where she has studied the
ethical constructs of war and peacemaking. Her senior thesis looked at the ways in which
weapons technology desensitizes U.S. solders to loss of life, and she is especially interested in
just war theory and war crimes law. At Oxford, Meg plans to do the M.Phil. in international
relations. She is the University of California, Irvine’s first Rhodes Scholar.
California
John S. Scotti, San Diego, is a senior at the University of Chicago where he will receive an
M.S. in chemistry, a B.Sc. in biological chemistry, and a B.A. in chemistry. A Goldwater
Scholar, he has extensive laboratory experience in biogenic synthesis, and is interested in
future uses of chemical synthesis to expand knowledge of biological pathways to lead to cures
for diseases. He is also passionate about the jazz piano, Latin and Roman history, and surfing.
John will do a D.Phil. in organic chemistry at Oxford.
